Badsey First School

Spanish

Our aim at Badsey First School is to develop children who are passionate, curious and confident about learning a foreign language and providing them with an understanding of other countries and cultures. We teach Spanish within years 3-5, through the use of the Language Angels scheme of work and resources, to ensure we offer a broad range of topics and themes. Language Angels offers activities which are tailored to meet a range of learning needs, through the inclusion of songs, images, and oral and written activities.
We provide a dynamic programme of study that ensures that the foreign language knowledge of our pupils progresses within each academic year and is extended year upon year throughout the primary phase. We revisit learning regularly to ensure pupils are expanding their vocabulary and have opportunities to practice and rehearse the language they have already learned.
We aim to ensure that pupils develop solid foundations key language learning skills - properly preparing them for the next stage of their language learning journey. These skills will develop children’s ability to understand what they hear and read and enable them to express themselves in speech and writing. We extend their knowledge of how language works and explore the similarities and differences between Spanish and English. We also help strengthen their sense of identity through learning about culture in other countries and comparing it with their own.
Pupils develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages, finding them enjoyable and stimulating. We want our pupils to become life-long language learners.

We follow the Primary National Curriculum for Languages in England.

Here is what our children say about learning Spanish

I love learning the Spanish songs in class, we get to sing along and make up actions and dance moves. It helps us toremember to the words.
I can now speak 3 different languages. I like how some Spanish words are similar to the English and French words so I can look out for patterns.
I enjoy playing the interactive games on the whiteboard, it can get competitive as we try to be the fastest in the class to read the Spanish word and then translate it.
My Grandma and Grandad live in Spain and I speak to them every week. I enjoy telling them what I have learnt to say in Spanish. When I go to visit them in the summer holidays, I can talk to them and their friends in Spanish.
